The Wildlife World Large Bempton Bird Table is an intricately designed birdhouse built from FSC approved timber from well managed forests. It is a large table based on the version called ‘Hanging Bempton’.

The Verdigris copper roof reflects the night sky, and the body is finished in a slick-green cover. This is a great addition to gardens of all sizes. In addition, its versatile bracket means that it can be attached to most walls and fences and the table is a good size for most smaller birds.

The maintenance and upkeep of this table is easy, due to the ability of being able to unmount it. It also has a removable tray made out of recycled plastic.  It is natural for wood to move in different weather conditions and small cracks may appear in the paintwork which will not affect the construction.

Gardman Wild Garden Bird Table

2 / 2

This rather elegant yet traditional looking bird table is one that we recommend due largely to its ease of cleaning and all-round maintenance. The Gardman Wild Garden Bird Table comes with sturdy metal frames that help support a bird feeding frenzy and can ably support medium to large-sized birds.

This table comes specifically with a pole that can be driven into the lawn, allowing more flexibility in where you can prop it up. Additionally, the use of the metal pole and 185cm height ensures you don’t have to worry about cats or other wildlife running up it and attacking the birds. Though it may appear a little flimsy, the pole is made to withstand relatively strong winds, ensuring you won’t be out fixing it back into the ground every other day.

The table comes with various feeding and water trays like peanut feeder, two seed feeders, a suet feast feeder, birdbath support ring, birdbath and feeder tray. The tray is easily removed when it requires cleaning and just as easily put back after.

This sleek and unimposing Fallen Fruits Wall Bird House is built to hang on walls and fences alike, managing a crowd of smaller birds. The lack of fixtures and fittings means that the simplicity is a huge factor of this feeder, removing any notion of preconceived stress to set-up.

Therefore the durability and long term use of this table makes it a favourite and provides exceptional value for money. You also need not worry about the iron rusting, as cast iron might rust on the surface but it does not impact the structural makeup of the table.

The easy set-up and long life of this bird table make it a favourite. You simply need to hang it to a wall or a fence with a nail, lay a bit of bird food on it and you’re good to go. Summary

A robust and well designed bird table is the minimum requirement to enable birds to have a successful feeding session. This is assuming that you don’t want to keep birds out with a large bird net

Depending on the type of bird you want to attract, you need to think about many elements before purchasing your bird tables, here’s what we think is the most important:

Location

Every bird table needs the perfect spot to ensure happy birds. If you choose a mounted bird table, this needs to be somewhere that is easily accessible and not hidden behind overgrown bushes or other foliage otherwise the birds will never know it’s there. You could place it near your outdoor bar table initially to attract birds.

While accessible to birds, it needs to be safe from other wildlife. If cats clock on to where all your birds are visiting and are able to jump up, it’s unlikely those little sparrows will want to return after a brush with death.

You probably want to discourage squirrels too, so if you are mounting on a tree or fence, choose somewhere that the entrance isn’t easy to access with climbing.

If you need a free-standing bird table, plastic and metal pole stands are the trickiest of those pesky little squirrels to climb. However, don’t underestimate them, if they want to get up there, they may still find a way.

The surrounding of a tree is a great place to put a bird table because they naturally approach trees to rest. You may even find birds start keeping the moss at bay, but if not, check out our review guide to the best moss killers.

Why not also consider building it near to a solar cascade water feature, giving the birds an area in which they can bathe as well as feed?

Material

The material has to be durable and easy to clean, with edges should not be too sharp so as to not hurt the birds.

It needs to be durable enough to withstand winds, scratches from the claws of the birds and exposure to the elements. You may wish to remove your retractable washing line to make it easier for the birds to navigate to your bird table. Finally, if it isn’t treated with an anti-fungal or antibacterial spray, you may want to purchase some moss killer and weed killer to do it yourself.

You also need to consider what form of bird food will be placed on them, some natural woods can be the perfect place for some seeds to grow. When it’s damp outside, you could find something growing on your bird table without your knowledge.

If you are going to be feeding natural birds seed, it may be better to opt for plastic or metal.

Type of Birds

You may not be fussed about which birds visit your garden or perhaps you are trying to attract more of a specific breed.

You’d be surprised how much the table can impact who comes for dinner. If you want to entice smaller birds, then choosing a table with a small entrance and low roof will work best as larger birds aren’t able to land on these, leaving all the food for your favourite breed.

Smaller birds are also far timider than your typical garden pigeon so something with a covering or roof will make them feel safe and lead to them frequenting your table more often.

Different birds have different taste so it’s good to do some research into what you want to be serving. Some birds prefer larger nuts and seeds, while others prefer tiny ones. So, you need to make sure your food of choice fits into your feeder and birds can pull them through any wiring easily if they are large.

If you need smaller food, you don’t want this falling through any feeding holes and gaps either.

Be Prepared for Mess

If your garden is picture-perfect with not a blade of grass out of place, a bird table may not be for you.

Our feathered-friends have terrible table manners and will have no respect for how long you took to get your garden looking beautiful. Your garden will quickly become a rubbish bin to shelled nuts and seeds, not to mention the increased amount of bird excrement!

These can be an eye-sore for some and can also begin to sprout unwanted plants in your lawn if not properly cleaned up.

If you really do have your heart set on a bird table and want reduced mess, have a look into getting suet balls. There will still be some mess but it will be reduced. Unfortunately, not all birds like these.

Finally, it’s important to keep your precious garden furniture stowed away when attracting birds. Especially hammocks, its hammock stand and rattan furniture.

FAQs

Common questions about bird tables

How Can I Attract Birds To My Bird Table?

Lay some of your birdseed on the ground around your bird table. Birds won’t naturally know there is food above ground level but will often forage around your soil.

Giving them a little helping hand to find their food’s location means they will soon know where to find their next meal and will gradually gravitate towards your bird table.

How Can I Deter Pigeons From My Bird Table?

Pigeons are notoriously greedy and will eat anything they can get their hands on. There is no real way to stop them from eating from your bird table as they have an appetite for everything.

The only way to stop them is to create a barrier that will prevent them from reaching your bird tables but still allows smaller birds in to feed.

Have a look at our guide on bird netting to find out what will work best for you.

How Can I Make A Bird Table?

There are many reasons why you may not find the right bird table so why not make one?

You can choose any shape or size you like but we would always recommend using wood as it is resilient to British winters and provides warmth for our feathered friends.

Give it a go and follow our guide on how to make a bird box.

What Food Can I Put On A Bird Table?

This all depends on what kind of bird you want to attract to your garden. Our ultimate guide to common garden birds is a perfect place to start when searching for the perfect birdseed.

Remember, birds’ diets need variation throughout the year. In the winter they rely on fats and protein to keep them warm through the cold spells, so it is important to mix up what you are giving them.
