Eating food straight off a bbq has got to be one of the best things about summer. Kicking back with some grilled food, a cold drink and great weather is what makes summer so enjoyable. However, if you don’t invest in a bbq cover – the life of your bbq may be a little short-lived. BBQ covers are designed to not just protect from wind and rain, but also to ensure that damage and erosion are at an absolute minimum. BBQ covers work great in tandem with BBQ shelters, too!

If you’re someone who has limited indoor space, whether this is a garage or conservatory – you may find that leaving your garden accessories and furniture outside is the only option that you have. In this scenario, investing in a bbq cover is probably one of the best things you can do to ensure that you aren’t wasting money on buying a new bbq when you could have extended its life purely from looking after it. If you do plan to keep your bbq outside all year round, you’re going to need to think about the type of cover you’ll need, as those needs will change depending on where you plan to keep your bbq for the majority of the year. If you plan to keep your bbq inside, you may not need a cover immediately – so don’t stress about finding the perfect one quickly, time is on your side and you can shop around.

Summary

As you can see, there are so many excellent options to choose from – with the majority being universally versatile, regardless of the size of your bbq. The same often can’t be said for other outdoor accessories/furniture such as a bbq shelter, a 3-seater garden swing or garden lights – which often have limited options available. If you own a bbq but don’t own a bbq cover – then you’ll hopefully be spoiled for choice and already have a rough idea on what kind of cover would work best for you.

However, if you don’t, we’ve listed a few things below for you to consider before making your purchase, as well as a detailed FAQ to answer any of the questions that you may have. So, keep reading!

Weight

Although you may not think this is an important factor, there are some bbq covers on the market which are incredibly heavy – which can pose a risk and blocker to those who may be of old age, or lacking the strength to put on and take off the cover. Anything over 800g in weight would be considered slightly more “heavy-duty” – and once you reach past the 2kg mark then you’re probably going a little bit overboard, as this kind of weight would only be used for incredibly industrial BBQs used on a large commercial scale.

Material density

There is a variety of material density’s available, the most common being 300d. Anything less than 300d probably wouldn’t be suited to somewhere with extreme weather conditions such as snow or excessive dust, and we’d recommend something along the lines of 500-600d, especially if you plan to keep your bbq outside all year round. Make sure you check the material density, and if you plan to keep your bbq indoors – you can opt for something at 300d or even less.

Inside/outside

As we mentioned earlier, this is probably the most important thing to consider. If you plan to keep your bbq outside all year round with your artificial hanging baskets and rattan side tables, you’re going to need to think about the type of cover you’ll need, as those needs will change depending on where you plan to keep your bbq for the majority of the year. If you plan to keep your bbq inside, you may not need a cover immediately – so don’t stress about finding the perfect one quickly, time is on your side and you can shop around.

FAQ

Should you cover your bbq?

It isn’t completely necessary to cover your bbq, however, if you want to extend the life of it and prevent wear and tear, then we highly recommend to invest in buying one. If you plan to leave your bbq outdoors all year round, a cover will help to protect it from the elements as well as any damage that can be caused by the weather or wild animals. If you plan to leave your bbq in a garage, a cover isn’t completely necessary but is a good investment regardless.

What is the best bbq cover?

We’d be biased if we told you about the best cover on the market – especially as it’s all down to personal preference. However, a good cover should always be water-resistant at an absolute minimum, as well as having the option to tighten or loosen it depending on the size of your bbq. Aside from those two points, the rest is completely up to you.

Can I use a tarp as a bbq/grill cover?

In theory, yes, you can use a tarp to cover your bbq or grill, but it may not be as effective as a bbq cover overall due to the materials used, as well as the dimensions. A tarp can be great to cover your patio heater, rattan cube garden furniture, and rattan garden benches, for example. These often need less protection as they have been designed to be left outdoors all year round. If you can’t afford a bbq cover, a tarp can be a cheaper alternative.

Do bbq covers prevent rust?

Yes. Over time, water, dirt and dust will start to rust and erode the metal in your bbq – so keeping this clean, dry and covered is key. We also recommend bringing in your grill trays when you don’t use your bbq, as these are less durable than the exterior of the bbq itself. Finally, ensure you clean your bbq and bbq cover on a regular basis to prevent further wear and tear. A petrol pressure washer or an electric washer works perfectly.
